Brandt Questions

QandD

1. Brant defines literacy sponsor as something that poses some definitions of literacy. When talking about literacy it is accurate to speak about literacies, which is evaluating your own competence in communication. Literacies come in many different forms. You have home literacies such as storytelling and the language you speak. Hobby related literacies can include radio- controlled vehicles or gaming. The school system can teach you many different types of literacies like computer and information literacy. Your personal history including your family, your geographic location, your culture, your hobbies, your religious training, and your schooling teach you the basic literacies to function in society.

2. Literacy is sponsored by people. Sponsors of literacy benefit because it will support their goals.  Some literacy sponsors are organizations or institution, like a public school or a major corporation. Before the invention of the printing press, the biggest literacy sponsor in Western Civilization was the Roman Catholic Church.  Most literacy sponsors are empowering and prevent illiteracy in Americans. I have learned to become literate from having good conversation with my parents and teachers.

4. In Brandt’s writing by the word stratified is being referred to as the strategies sponsors use to force the formation of new literacy requirements, while decertifying older ones. They both have different dynamic of literacy sponsorship.  There is stakes involved because there is always a need to get a competitive advantage above the rest, always having a thirst for more knowledge. It pertains to the potential of the sponsors to divert sponsors’ resources toward ulterior projects, often of self- interest or self-interest.

Applying and Exploring

1. My literacy I feel is more comparable to sponsorship patterns of Branch because he went to a large university and the occupations of his parents were more comparable. Lopez lived in a more rural lifestyle and went to a very diverse University. Branch learned most of his literacy though his parents and his education where I always learned most of my literacy. I feel they were adequate because I was accepted in to college. I wish I had spoken to my father more because he owns a business, so I would have a better business oriented sponsor. Every teacher up until my English 151 class has forced a certain topic or certain literacy on my learning.

2. My school was very catholic and one book banned from my school was, 50 Shade of Grey because it was too provocative.  Every year in high school the students of each particular grade has assigned list of very boring books to read, which I didn’t enjoy. MY senior year English teacher didn’t feel magazines counted as reading, although I feel they are a good source of public knowledge. One of my influential sponsors of literacy is my grandfather, because he is a very influential person and a very powerful speaker though his story telling.

Meta Moment

Most of the chapter goals apply to most of Deborah Brandt’s article. She explains the concepts of literacy and multiple literacies. She states how sponsors are a good source to connect to certain groups and different audiences. Depending on where you have attended school or have worked helps the research or the planning needed to improve or advocate literacy. I didn’t really notice much of Brandt discussing vocabulary, but it was touched on, she could have elaborated more on that topic. On discussing different personal backgrounds of shaping literacy, she elaborated and made it easy to understand where literacy comes from. Her article didn’t discuss much about improving researched based or jargon based texts. Understanding where your literacy comes from helps you cite your sources and gain more from your reading.

Eng151- Bryson & Dawkins

Dr. Steven Kapela

Avalon Bednarcik

Before you Read

3. Technology has changed the way humans communicate in many ways. Somewhat beginning with writing letter, to constantly texting. This takes away so much face to face contact with people you love and care about. Technology in my opinion has also made people more ignorant, and has destroyed our knowledge of grammar. It does help us communicate faster, but less efficiently. Technology like Skype is very beneficial to correcting this problem.  Technology isn’t always grammatically correct because on most sources you can you abbreviations, and the other person you are communicating to will still understand what you are saying, an example is lol. This can affect your understanding of what people are saying because many other cultures with less technology will never understand these words because they are not included in the dictionary. New words that people from cultures and even an older generation wouldn’t understand can include, rolf, smh, and gata.

D & J

1. Bryson is specifically challenging the writing construct of the parts of speech and the way grammarians look at it. Bryson states how he believes parts of speech are entirely notional. His example of this is, when he gives an example sentence and rewrites it. Just by the reorganization of the word, suffering, it changes the word from a verb to a noun.  Many words in the English language are abused, to the degree that we do not know how to properly use them. Some of these words can included, uninterested and disinterested, between imply and infer. Also he states how our entire language is based on the Latin language. These to language in our current time he believes have very little in common. The English language has a lack of authority and can be very complex and confusing because of these various reasons.

3. What Bryson is trying to say within this statement is that, why would you take a plural verb when the sense is clearly singular. The prejudice Bryson classifies this under is a split infinitive. He explains how a Conservative Politian only returned letter including a split infinitive, which is an adverb comes between to and a verb. He expels his two examples of this, which includes; English ought to conform to the grammatical concepts that died thousand years ago, and you wish to cling to pointless affectation of usage that is without the support of any recognized authority. I really have never looked at English, let alone talking in this way. I have only seen communication as proper or ignorant and this statement is pretty self-explanatory. Any normal person can tell someone has never learned proper or even common English to some extent.

Applying and Exploring

1. Bryson states that English authority attacks the construction different than as a regrettable American, and how things appear differently in Washington than in London. He believes this statement is very ungrammatical. We use words in a very unattractive way- admittedly, mercifully, happily, curiously and so on. WE are instructed to resort to a clumsily passive and periphrastic construction, and the reason authorities maintain that hopefully in the first sentence is a misplaced modal auxiliary- that’s is doesn’t belong to any other part of the sentence. I’ve seen how English has modernized a lot, because half the time both my parents and my grandparents can’t understand what I am saying. This is because alone our current generation has created a whole new language by itself. I believe Bryson would completely condone this and hates how ignorant our language has become.

Dawkins

Q & J

1. Dawkin is challenging the writing concept of how people understand punctuation rules, and offers a solution to the way people construct rules.

3. Dawkins made my whole view of punctuation change. He talks about how teacher do make students look at punctuation in a very strict way. He gives sixty nine examples of how you have choices between periods and semicolons, semicolons and commas, and commas and dashes, dashes and parentheses. I never looked at punctuation in this way and before reading this article, punctuation actually scared me.

Applying and exploring

4. In high school and grade school, I can honestly say I had the writing skill of a kindergartener. Although I cannot tell how much this class has already improved my writings. If I was writing a letter to a past teacher it would be my third grade teacher, Mrs. Brown, because I didn’t learning anything that year. It would include all the things I need to learn and really wish I did, although this could be my fault for not paying attention, but there is no way of proving now.

Dear Mrs. Brown,

There are many concepts about writing I really don’t understand. I can name countless sentence structure rules I’ve never understood. Also many simple word rules like the different between a short and long vowel, and syllables. I am in another remedial English class besides this one and I finally understanding the concepts of nouns, verbs, adjective, and etc. Now that’s bad, I’m in college and I don’t know how to pick prepositional phrases out of a sentence. Do you want to know why I didn’t learn these rules? Because they are pointless. I know this because I made it all the way to college without knowing anything about them. Apparently it is required to know these things though, if you are attempting to become a communications major though.  I’ve gotten though every English class I’ve ever been in though with no grade lower than a ‘B’ my entire life, knock on wood. So, thank you Mrs. Brown for not making sure I learned these rules because they are pointless and unnecessary to me. That is all, thank you, and has a wonderful day.

Sincerely, Avalon B

Quotes
1. We can assume that visually informative texts achieve rhetorical organization, just as do text which are relative non- informative visually. Both types must provide direction to the reader as to how the text is to be read: Pg. 36

2. But this characterization does seem sufficiently influential within our disciple to be considered the norm, the product we encourage in our practice within the “current-traditional paradigm.” Pg. 36

3. Cataldo suggests that the principles codified by experiments in perception can be usefully applied to the visual/verbal design of graphic texts. Perhaps the most relevant law is that of equilibrium, or pragnanz, which suggests that items in a visual field strive for balance or equilibrium with other items in the field. The wetlands text works well, in part, because the distribution of print on the first on the first on the first page achieves equilibrium simultaneously along several axes: Pg. 39

4. Our results show that lines may be short or long, a page may have neat margins or ragged margins. No matter. What is critical is whether the lines represent meaningful groups of information. It is this matching of visual design to the constraints of cognitive processing that makes for efficiency. Pg. 42
My Comments
1. I feel this was unnecessary information within the article, because this is common sense. Also, there should not be much non informative information because it defeats the purpose of your writing, if you are not informing your audience of something.
2. Within the paragraph of the quote it states the basic common format most people use and the style is set up. I found this very interesting because its true and I never realized I set most of my papers up in this format, unintentionally.
3. This quote basically states that your paper is easier for the reader to understand if your paragraphs are set with equilibrium. Although I do not agree with this statement because I feel the topics in the paper I want the reader to understand better are long and more in detail then the rest. This makes my writings flow better and help the reader understand the point I am trying to get across more thoroughly.
4. Essentially this quote to be over powers the entire article because it basically everything else that you just read wasn’t true. I stand by this quote and think it’s very true, no matter what the style of your paper is set up as long as you have a clear cut message then your read with comprehend what you consider important.

Porter Questions

Avalon Bednarcik

Dr. Steven Kapela

Questions for Discussion

4. Porter argues the key criterion for writing is ‘acceptability’ within the reader’s community and I assumed a whole different idea about writing before this article. I never how in-depth a reading community could be and how many standards they have. I thought writing would be evaluated for its face value, and how it is used in the context of the paper. The papers I have been assigned to write in the past were usually graded based on the rubric assigned with the paper. Before this article I never knew what a discourse community was and how much of a major part to writing a paper it created. They weren’t graded through approved channels called forums. These forums have a distinct history and rules governing to where each member is obligated to adhere. My writings have never been evaluated in this way, but many professional writing have been. This limits their freedom in the rhetorical context and I never thought of writing in this way before.

5. Porter is right about intertextuality and its effects on originally. This reflects in his own writing because there’s only so many ways to say the same idea, so I believe many texts do bounce off of other texts ideas. This doesn’t mean it takes the originality of any writers’ text though. He says even the Declaration of Independence, is similar to the English bill of rights, but they are both original documents in my viewpoint. They were autonomous documents because all the authors carefully decided what to put into each document. I feel his writings can go either way on the spectrum, but do reflect an autonomous individual.

Applying and Exploring Ideas

2. Based on Porters argument in this article, my rewritten definition for plagiarism would state, you cannot take someone else’s writing word for word out of context without citing it, but you can use concepts of other authors. Intertextulism I believe is seen in many writing, but is subconsciously done because you have seen the writings before, but you apply them into you own word and thoughts. Compared to the original definition of plagiarism, they are literally the same. Compared to Porter’s definition I feel they are very different because he has a very strict definition of the word plagiarism.

Meta- Moment

Yes Porter’s study has changed my views of writers and their writings. I realized how difficult it is for them to subject their writings to a certain forum. It limits the writers to certain ideas and to make their writings stand out and be original. I feel it is very difficult for me now to write and adopting Porters ideas would limit my writings even more and make it more difficult for me to get my original ideas out.

ELBOW'S QUESTIONS(:

Dr. Steven Kapela

Avalon Bednarcik

Before you read

1. You construct your identity using Facebook by making a profile and customizing it with pictures and statuses. You can also add and delete your friends making your profile as personal as you want. Although, the internet is accessible to everyone, and once something is on the internet, it will be there forever. Some people are very stupid at what they post on their Facebook and this can hurt them later on in life when they try to get a job. It’s not smart or cool to put pictures of drugs and drinking on your profile so people know you actually have a social life.  Sensible and wise Facebook users only upload appropriate picture and statuses.

2. If I was able to use the word ‘I’ in this assignment, which I think I already did, then it would be a lot more personal. My writing would be deeper and more meaningful. The word, I can enhance a paper and make it seem a lot more powerful. I wish more teachers found the word ‘I” more acceptable to use in student writings.

Question for Discussion and Journaling

1. My personal definition for voice is, each individuals own way to express themselves, through writing or speaking, and etc. I’ve never really thought about the definition of voice, to be honest. The only definition of voice I’ve ever really thought of was my own, but compared to Elbow’s definition it has not many similarities. He states how voice is very important in text and it should be paid attention to, which agrees with my definition. Although, he exclaims that when you write your voice is not your own, but your culture. I disagree with this, because even though we are taught by our culture, we are still individuals.

Applying and Exploring Ideas

1. Sincerity- the genuiness of your actions to others

Resonance- The significance of your actions

I did not struggle with this exercise, this shows I have a strong vocabulary and will use these word in my writings.

Connecting to other readings

1. As Elbow says that voice is rhetorical, if we adopt this to a scientific voice it has a much different meaning. Adopting a scientific voice, would be applying your own research and comparing it with the questions you still have to essentially figure the connection between both. Many question you believe you don’t know the answer to, your voice can help you figure out that answer.

Ready to Read

I feel when most students who don’t enjoy writing do not really have a writing construct. They just Google the information they need and start typing. Many serious writers conduct more of a routine. Starting with researching a topic, making and outline, and editing/ re-editing. Once you get into the swing of writing develops their own style how to write a paper. This could be very similar to many professional writers. Generally I feel most professional writers have a natural talent and love for writing , so they would probably just free base, then revise extensively. When I think of a professional writer I get this idea in my head of a person who absolutely loves writing, unlike myself. It’s one of those people who love reading books, and writing papers. They are very studious and very much enjoy their English class. They take time writing papers, and rewrite them until they are perfect. They conduct lots of research and make outlines for their paper by find key information. No I know from my experience writing is not easy and takes lot of hard work. I am very bad at writing papers and my process is typically very sloppy. I usually just look up the desired research and then begin to type.

Applying and Exploring Ideas

1. Almost every time I write a paper I use imitation because I feel it’s easy to outline someone else paper. It is easier for me to read someone else’s paper and frame an outline to help me write. Sitting down and writing a paper it’s hard to think of creative ideas so it helps to look at other works. The only circumstance I feel this would be unreasonable is if you are plagiarizing. If you’re actually coping their work then you aren’t even writing an original paper.

Questions for Discussing and Journaling

1. The posed myth of a mythical writer, for example would be J.K Rowling and many students believe their writings will never be comparable to someone of such talent. When she encounters a student who doesn’t enjoy writing and they have a challenging time with beginning a paper she directs the student to imitate writing of others. The reality of being an inspired writer, is that we everyone can be an inspiring writer. It depends on the individual and what inspires them, they just need to start writing and type from the heart.

3. I have colluded in the past many times, like the reading; I also have my mom edit my papers. Not any of my high school reports, but when I was in grade school she would help and check my work for me. I really don’t believe that collusion could even be considered plagiarism because it’s just like getting a second opinion on your writings. It could be considered plagiarism if someone else colluded your entire paper and you rewrote it because of everything they edited. At that point it would essentially be considered someone else’s work.

Meta-moment

I have never been negatively inspired by a writer; if I do not like there idea I usually just take it for what it is or disregard it. I always stand by my idea because i stand by my ideas and support them. Typically looking at other writings helps me form my idea better even if my idea doesn’t exactly click with theirs. I believe no idea is a bad idea. I really enjoyed reading Allen’s article; all the articles from this book have honestly helped me improve my writings.

Berger and McCloud Questions

Dr. Steven Kapela

Avalon Bednarcik

Before you read

1. I’m a painter walking through the woods; I set my equipment down and decided to draw beautiful women. This women was imaginary, she would be looking directly at me because I’m friendly, and so she has no reason to walk away. She would be a very pretty women and she would be floating on top of the water, like a magical being. There are beautiful glowing trees  and bugs flying all around. I want the scene to seem very mystical and relaxing. I would not make this women naked or nude because I feel there is no need for this women to be running around the woods without close on. She would most likely be wherein vines around her.

3.

.

In many pictures of women, they can be somewhat degrating compared to pictures of men. Although in the picture to the left Angelina Jolie is simplely standing there with confidence and showing off her tatoo. Johnny Depp is in the picture to the right. He is also standing with confidence and rocking a very nice hat. These celebraties seem to be depicted as eqauls in these pictures. Although, each of these individuals have been presented, less classy, depending on the photographer.

Questions for Discussion and Journaling

1. Yes, I beileve the aritists creating these picture knew exactly what they were painting. Typically all artists have a clear cut idea of what they wish to create before they begin. Although they may have also noticed they were turnign these people and objects into to possions. Putting themselves into their preception of this object, and showing affection for the objects the invented. I feel berger would agree with my ideas, because after creating a beautiful piece of art work some of your heart goes into these painting. Also, making his painting an ideal image of the women  created, only being a unperfect person in real life.

2. Pictures of women a presented everywhere from television, magazings, and run way models. These images can be presented in both classy and derogetory ways. Even tho most of the women in this article  presented are naked, you have to take the picture as a whole. They somewhat seem to be praised, because of the beautiful scenery behind them. I believe these images cannot be compared because it is two totally different aspects of looking at a women. These styles both have there own features and depict different ideas when you see them. In this day in age I feel our picture of women have changed a lot. If you look at many women in magazines now they are half naked and it somewhat sad. Looking at pictures of Marylin Monore from the 80’s, she is presented so much more classy and looks ten times more beauitful then women now.I believe the photography industry is devolving.

Appling and Exploring ideas

1. One type of artwork presented in a particular way, to me atleast, is male models. Honestly I just think they look really femanine and its somewhat for a man the be a male model. I feel the way women look at women in pictures is not the way women look at men and protray them differently. I believe there is a redicculous painting gap between Bergers painting and painting veiwed now. I only see pictures like Bergers in meusems. Also there is many different rules of social society today, and its also impossible to look at them with the same perspective.

3.  The ideas froms the 1970’s is suprizing, really relatable to how people look at pictures now. They do not look the same as pictures from the 1970’s although thoughts about them are still the same. Every man still believes he needs to be envisioned as powerful and a provider. Although the way men look at pictures of women might be somewhat more derogetory now, women still veiw these pictures in the same way.

McCloud

Before you Read

1. My all time favorite cartoon is SpongBob Squarepants. I still try to watch when I have time. Its one of the few cartoons I still find funny. I see so many connections between me the sponge. All my cousin even tell me, I am Spongebob! Him and me were basically souls mates and we both laugh at stupid, immature things and mess with there neighbors, with there bestfriend. Now that I think of it, I also used to work in a fast food industry. After watching this show for many years in realised the similarities.

Questions for disscussion and Journaling

1. I feel many people relate to the simplicity because we do not all the features of ourselfs, so it is easy for us to understand presented in this way. I still watch cartoons to this day and I know many people that also do the same. Everything is prefectly acceptable as long it is moderation and dosent consume your entire life. I feel McCloud would say its an amplification of our identification and it would be a simple way for people at a young age to present themselves.

2. I feel it was a visual technique used so the reader would understand the message he is trying to convey. It helps the reader really understand that we can present ourselfs through our words, the same way we can present them through images. Presented in this way opens your mind to new ways of expression and I really enjoyed the way it was expressed. I feel I wouldn’t of understood as many of his ideas presented in standard format.

Applying and Exploring Ideas

1. Yes, because I really don’t enjoying texts that elaborate, when they could easily be direct and to the point. It made this a very interesting and easy read. I understood most of the main points and sparked my interest in this topic. I think more english classes and language classes could benefit from this. I feel many students have trouble getting threw the information and visual imagery could easily solve this problem. It would also be easier for students to express themselves in this context.

2. McCloud feels as a yound adolesent growing up it is easier for us to convey the most important person in your life, yourself, through a cartoon. It easier to draw the simple details, instead of drawing every zip and freckle on your face. Although I have seen many real life images depicted to explain a subject. There are many examples of this, such a looking a tmountains and automattically think of hiking. Many visual images connect in my mind the certain words to help understand the concept more easily.

Research Summary

Trying to find yourself in such a diverse world, can have its challenges. I figured choosing, ”whether or not it is important to be yourself” would not be a very difficult topic to research, although it is a topic the entire class can relate to. Looking upon the suggested websites you referred to us, I only found one website to be really useful. It’s called Articles Plus, I fell in love with it because, I found the information needed and I still looked up other books on here I would love to read. I skimmed the summaries of books referenced and the book I feel will be the most beneficial for my research is, “Be yourself, believe in yourself, and be happy.” This book includes many various areas that come with being yourself and I feel it will be very useful. The other resource I used was Google, which lead me to an article called, “There is tipping point of Loving, Doing, and Giving enough to ‘win’ people over”. This doesn’t exactly relate to my topic, but it opens more points of view to my topic. Basically stating that people typically do more and change their ideas to please someone else. I feel the research I have conducted will help my write an adequate paper.

Writing Construct Proposal

Whether it is important to be yourself or not

In a world of such diverse and constantly changing culture, it can be hard to be the person you really wish to be. With so many social media networks, like Twitter and Facebook, constantly trending new topics every day girls will start trying to look like super models by not eating a regular diet. And on the other side of the spectrum, children are being bullied in schools because of their being overweight. Having so much judgment all around you can affect the character of a person, especially of a young age, very negatively. I chose whether or not it is important to be yourself because I feel growing up is one thing everyone struggles with at some point. I know I’ve had my fair share of highs and lows in my life, and so has everyone else. This topic will be very easy to relate to for the whole audience and it is a topic I can put real emotion into, so I am excited to share my ideas on whether it is important to be yourself.

Summary

Every text has many different, hidden meaning behind it that many untrained readers miss. Even now in our current time facts are still evolving. As we followed the learning experiences of a particular student, Shirley, she learns to do more than reporting “just the facts.” Stating many of Kantz’s beliefs of facts, opinions, and arguments.

Synthesize

Throughout all the readings there have been many connections and similarities. All having a concept of style to frame your reading.  Discussing many ways an argument can be portrayed.  Going in to, even facts can be considered claims, based on your point of view.

Question and discussion

1.       Kantz contends that facts, opinions, and arguments aren’t really what we were taught in our past. Kantz contends that facts and opinions are claims although arguments consist of claims proved with data.

2.       The list of things Kantz says students do not know about text work is “who are you”, “what is the question or problem with this topic”, and “how have I used thiese materials to answer your question or solve your problem”, and mostly “how”, “why”, and “so what”. Yes I believe that when I write essays, I have many of these questions, and sometimes, they go unanswered. I feel I could better research these questions and find the answers to them now.

Apply and Exploring Ideas

2.  In the past, I have always taken creativity into research through the fact that whilst doing research, I would turn things like regular readings into note cards and model them into such a way that when reading them afterwards it was not only very organized, but efficient, and Kantz has the idea that creativity is the most important factor in building an original argument as well as well as having a divergent interpretation, creativity can help answer the rest of the question the research cannot fulfill. I feel myself and Kantz have very similar lines of thought and that works out well for me.

Meta Moment

                1. Kantz’ constructs and conceptions were to put through the idea that creativity helps your mind essentially work out in a way not previously used to, such to say that it is not just memorizing, but creating a work in your mind that it will actually hold onto. This technique is a valued asset, especially in the mode of writing papers. It is useful for me to use these findings and claims simply through the fact that it allows your mind to be more open to the possibilities of learning as well as moving forward into the literary world and increasing your inherent ability to write papers.
