ELBOW'S QUESTIONS(:

Dr. Steven Kapela

Avalon Bednarcik

Before you read

1. You construct your identity using Facebook by making a profile and customizing it with pictures and statuses. You can also add and delete your friends making your profile as personal as you want. Although, the internet is accessible to everyone, and once something is on the internet, it will be there forever. Some people are very stupid at what they post on their Facebook and this can hurt them later on in life when they try to get a job. It’s not smart or cool to put pictures of drugs and drinking on your profile so people know you actually have a social life.  Sensible and wise Facebook users only upload appropriate picture and statuses.

2. If I was able to use the word ‘I’ in this assignment, which I think I already did, then it would be a lot more personal. My writing would be deeper and more meaningful. The word, I can enhance a paper and make it seem a lot more powerful. I wish more teachers found the word ‘I” more acceptable to use in student writings.

Question for Discussion and Journaling

1. My personal definition for voice is, each individuals own way to express themselves, through writing or speaking, and etc. I’ve never really thought about the definition of voice, to be honest. The only definition of voice I’ve ever really thought of was my own, but compared to Elbow’s definition it has not many similarities. He states how voice is very important in text and it should be paid attention to, which agrees with my definition. Although, he exclaims that when you write your voice is not your own, but your culture. I disagree with this, because even though we are taught by our culture, we are still individuals.

Applying and Exploring Ideas

1. Sincerity- the genuiness of your actions to others

Resonance- The significance of your actions

I did not struggle with this exercise, this shows I have a strong vocabulary and will use these word in my writings.

Connecting to other readings

1. As Elbow says that voice is rhetorical, if we adopt this to a scientific voice it has a much different meaning. Adopting a scientific voice, would be applying your own research and comparing it with the questions you still have to essentially figure the connection between both. Many question you believe you don’t know the answer to, your voice can help you figure out that answer.
